Ardsley NY Community

Known for its family atmosphere and great schools, the town of Ardsley sits east of the Hudson on green, rolling hills where you'll probably spot a few bald eagles or wild turkeys if you keep an eye out. With a population of 5,000 and a total area of 1.3 square miles, there is a lot happening in this friendly community. Originally settled by the ubiquitous Frederick Philipse in the 1600's, the land was turned over to patriot tenants after the Revolution, and was first called Ashford (Ashford Avenue is now the city's major thoroughfare). In the 1880's, Cyrus W. Field became one of Westchester's most prosperous land holders, owning 780 acres between Dobbs Ferry and Greenburgh, which he called Ardsley Park, homage to the town of his ancestors in Great Britain, and so Ashford became Ardsley. Its population grew exponentially after the First and Second World Wars, and so the Concord Road Elementary School and Ardsley Middle and High Schools were built. The city is also home to the French-American Lyceum Kennedy, where kids can study in a French-styled educational atmosphere.

Ardsley Community & Attractions

One of Ardsley's most famous sites is the palatial Ardsley Country Club, founded in 1895 and offering golf, tennis, and pool activities. There is also the Ardsley Curling Club, which has been booming since the recent interest in the sport as a result of the Olympic competitions; if you'd like to take lessons, however, they're full up until the end of 2010. The Community Center on Center Street is usually bustling with folks taking any of the many Adult Ed classes or seniors dropping by for a chat.

Things to do & Dining in Ardsley

For such a small town, Ardsley has a great number of small vest-pocket parks, and its largest ones are Ashford (tennis, softball, basketball, soccer, and a skatepark) and McDowell (four baseball diamonds, basketball, and a picnic pavilion). There's Annual Park Day, with a tennis tournament, a 5K run, and an annual garage sale, and big Halloween festivities and holiday tree lightings in December. October 4 th is Ardsley Day, when the town celebrates big-time with music, skateboarding demos, food, vendors, and a beer tasting.

For those on a budget, Ardsley is a super dining destination; there's authentic Japanese fare at Sazan, traditional Italian specialties at Giuseppe, and a mind-boggling Philly Cheesesteak Pizza at Mina's, where those fainter of heart can also enjoy eggplant rollatini and chicken parmigiana as good as Mama's. Finish off the repast with a brownie from the award-winning Riviera Bakeshop. If you'd prefer to make your own meal, De Cicco market is as fine as any Manhattan specialty store, with prepared foods, cheeses, and pastries that will make your mouth water.
